The SMILD project is promoted by the Dept. of Mathematics of the University of Genoa. The project aims at promoting the acquisition of skills and key competences by secondary school Maths teachers to address learning disabilities of their students. The project has developed Guidelines addressed to Maths teachers on analyzing the learning disabilities in Maths as well as on how to address these learning disabilities and common difficulties in Maths. The project also created three types of tools that aim to, respectively: (1) identify learning disabilities of Maths students (2) take action and tackle the identified disabilities (3) monitor and assess the improvements made.

Students with Mathematics Learning Disabilities
Context
Learning difficulties in mathematics do not often occur with clarity and simplicity. They manifest themselves differently in different people, and are often left undiagnosed.
Objectives
The project’s main objectives are to provide math teachers with:
- Protocols to determine the most appropriate solutions for the students with Learning Disabilities in Math
- Reliable, easy to use and operative set of references materials and information to identify and tackle underachievement in Math.
