Project Title
A Holistic Approach to Preventing Student Disengagement
Context
Student disengagement is a very serious issue, particularly
at lower secondary school, since it might lead to early
school leaving. The most frequent causes of
disengagement have been identi ed in insu cient
attention to the students’ emotional needs and to
inadequate prrsonalisation of the teaching methods. As
often as not, teachers, school counselors and school leaders
do not feel adequately equipped to deal with this issue and
to actively collaborate with parents. For this reason, the
project aims to provide the main stakeholders with the
right tools and strategies to e ectively cope with student
disengagement, thus helping prevent early school dropout.
Objectives
• Help teachers, school counsellors and parents to build
up suitable skills to identify signs of student
disengagement and implicit early school leaving;
• Provide teachers, school counsellors and parents with
the right strategies to address students’ disengagement
and implicit early school leaving;
• Promote the Service Learning approach as a viable
strategy to create a supportive learning environment
and prevent implicit school dropout.
Target Group
• Students in the 11-13 age group;
• Lower Secondary School Teachers;
• School Counselors;
• School leaders;
• Families.
Results
• A collection of case studies analysing the rst signs of
implicit school dropout;
• A set of operational strategies to prevent
disengagement and early school leaving;
• Speci c training packages for teachers, school
counsellors and parents on how to identify students’
disengagement and prevent implicit early school
leaving;
