Project Title
Educate and Innovate - Shaping the University Future with Responsible Artificial Intelligence
Context
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not a new phenomenon, its development spans decades. However, in recent years, especially during 2023, it has gained more collective attention, mainly due to the implementation of generative programs like Chat GPT.
Despite this, the scope, capabilities, opportunities, and threats posed by AI are still not entirely clear. However, it is of utmost importance that each society reflects on the current state of this technology, its use in their social context, the ability to implement it inclusively, and, above all, project into the future what kind of ethics and development they want AI to adopt.
In this reflective process, university educators and researchers play a fundamental role given their influence in training new professionals essential for social, economic, and cultural progress. Therefore, it is crucial that these professionals familiarize themselves with new technologies and understand their implications in education, especially in terms of ethics and inclusion, thus highlighting the commitment to modernization and qualification of the educational offer through the qualification of the lecturers, researchers and the overall higher education working teams.
Among the technologies that are key for university educators, AI stands out as one of the most relevant. Acquiring skills in this field not only allows them to understand and apply AI in their teaching methods but also to guide students towards an ethical and responsible use of this technological innovation.
Objectives
The overall scope of the Ethical AI project is designing an ethical standard for the use of Artificial Intelligence in university education.
• Involve academic and research communities in a common effort to establish a regulatory framework and international based for a promoting discussions focused on identifying best practices and ethical needs in the use of AI in university academic activities.
• Enhancing the capacity of higher education lecturers of Costa Rica and Peru of handling and condensing ethical practices in the use of Artificial Intelligence in university education
• Develop global recommendations for the ethical and adaptable use of AI in university education, ensuring alignment with international regulations and standards.
Target Group
The project is addressed to professors, lecturers, and researchers of the HEIs of Costa Rica and Peru.
Results
In order to pursue the objectives, the project through a capacity building process involving Higher Education from Costa Rica, Peru and Europe, will achieve the following results:
• Involvement of experts, lecturers, and relevant academic leaders in collaborative workshops to identify current needs and ethical challenges inherent in the use of AI in higher education, acquiring skills on the practical implementation of ethical principles for the use of artificial intelligence in higher education
• Collection of peers to peer validated best practices in ethical AI use in university education
• Shared proposal for a regulatory framework defining principles and rules for the ethical use of AI in university education
• Establishment of an International Forum for exploring the Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence in University Education - Availability of a transnationally validated a set of guidelines promoting the positive and ethical use of AI in education courses
• Policy Recommendations for the effective and ethical use of Artificial intelligence in higher education
