The European project entitled Ted-SOEP “Transforming STEM teacher education in South Africa through Self-Directed Open Educational Practices” has been written and coordinated by the project applicant, North-West University (South Africa), in cooperation with Pixel. The project was funded by the Erasmus+ Programme, Capacity Building in the field of Higher Education. The Ted-SOEP project has the aim to foster collaboration and partnerships between South African institutions and European partners involved in STEM teacher education, to enable the exchange and transfer of expertise, best practices and know-how in integrating self-directed open educational practices (OEPs) and open educational resources (OERs) into STEM teacher education

Project Title

Transforming STEM teacher education in South Africa through Self-Directed Open Educational Practices

Context

South Africa faces challenges in providing equitable access to high-quality Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education at higher education level.
The overall scope of the project is to foster collaboration between South African and European HEIs to enable the exchange and transfer of expertise, best practices and know-how in integrating self-directed open educational practices (OEPs) and open educational resources (OERs) into STEM teacher education.

Objectives

The specific objectives of the project are:
• Enhance the skills, knowledge and capacities of lecturers and teacher-students in STEM education in South African Higher Education, on making full, aware and effective use of Self-Directed Learning (SDL) based methods, Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Educational Practices (OEP) in their educational offer and teaching approaches.
• Establish a sustainable environment for the sharing, adaptation and creation of self-directed teaching resources OER and OEP based for STEM teacher-students and lecturers in STEM fields.
• Provide a set of methodological and practical steps for Higher Education Institutions and policy makers to promote the adoption of self-directed based OEPs (Open Educational Practices) and OERs (Open Educational Resources) tailored for the South African context

Target Group

The project is addressed to university lecturers, pre-service and in-service STEM education teachers.

Results

In order to pursue the objectives, the project through a capacity building process involving South African and European HEIs will achieve the following results:
• South African pre-service and in-service STEM education teacher-students and STEM education lecturers acquiring the skills to apply Self-Directed Learning based methods, integrating Open Educational Resources and establishing Open Educational Practices.
• Online course on how to on make full use of Self-Directed Learning based methods, integrating Open Educational Resources and establishing Open Educational Practices
• Online Database of at least 140 validated self-directed teaching resources OER and OEP based.
• Guidelines and Policy Recommendations for integrating OERs and self-directed OEPs into STEM education for educational authorities tailored for the South African
